If you’re involved in a car accident, follow these steps:
- Stay calm.
- Make sure you and your passengers are OK, move out of traffic if possible, and activate your hazard warning lights or set flares.
- Check on the health of other parties involved in the wreck including pedestrians.
- Call the police or the appropriate emergency number to report the accident. Obtain an accident report from the police.
- Take pictures of the accident if you can, including license plates.
- Contact your insurance company to report the claim.
- Do not admit fault. Only discuss the accident with the police and your claims representative.
- Write down the names, addresses, phone numbers, and license plate numbers for all drivers and witnesses. Ask drivers for their insurance company name and policy number.
